Is LIGO not vulnerable to earthquakes/plate shiftings?

We like to say that LIGO is sensitive to changes in length "a thousandth the diameter of a proton," but this is not quite true in reality. We are only sensitive to such small displacements if they occur cyclically with a repetition rate within the frequency range in which LIGO is sensitive. read more

LIGO detectors don't 'not shift.' Rather they don't shift at certain frequencies. Sound is a combination of frequencies. White noise is a combination of most frequencies. A chord is a combination of a few frequencies. You can tell the frequencies at which a sound is vibrating at, and which frequencies it is not vibrating at. Same with the LIGO detectors. read more
