Is Missouri considered a northern state or a southern state?

I am from Texas, but live in Missouri now. I always considered it a northern state before I moved here. I have heard northerners refer to it as a southern state, though. Missouri has a split personality. When you get up around St. Louis, where I live, it seems more midwestern or northern. read more

Missouri has a split personality. When you get up around St. Louis, where I live, it seems more midwestern or northern. But when you get down to southern Missouri, you can really hear the southern accent and it seems more like a southern state. Branson, in southern Missouri, is second only to Nashville in being known for country music. Nowadays I would likely refer to it as a midwestern state, neither northern nor southern. read more

Missouri is located at the center of the contiguous 48 states so is neither northern nor southern and is neither eastern nor western. Different parts of the state and different aspects of its history and culture may fit each of those classifications but as a whole it is both all and none of the above. read more
