Is Mount Hood a dormant volcano?

Best Answers

Mount Hood's last major eruption occurred in the 1790's not long before Lewis and Clark's expedition to the Pacific Northwest. In the mid-1800's, local residents reported minor explosive activity, but since that time the volcano has been quiet. Someday, however, Mount Hood will erupt again. read more

It is the mixing of the two types of magma that triggered Mount Hood's last two eruptions - about 220 and 1,500 years ago, said Adam Kent, an Oregon State University geologist and co-author of the study. read more

I consider it active! The crater (which isn't a traditional looking one, but is slightly offset from the peak) has heat sources close to the ground, and is constantly giving off steam and sulfur gas from fumaroles. read more

Mount Hood is considered the Oregon volcano most likely to erupt, though based on its history, an explosive eruption is unlikely. Still, the odds of an eruption in the next 30 years are estimated at between 3 and 7 %, so the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) characterizes it as"potentially active", but the mountain is informally considered dormant. read more

UC Davis volcanologist Kari Cooper talks about new studies of the magma reservoir under Mt. Mt Hood 75 km ESE of Portland is Oregon's highest peak and one of the most prominent of the Cascades volcanoes. It is probably the only volcano in Oregon which has erupted in historic times (last confirmed activity in 1865-66). read more
