The purity of pastel’s pigment, the fact that there is basically nothing between the pigment and the paper is what gives pastel paintings their luminosity. The pigment, is in effect, crystals been spread across the paper. That crystalline formation is what makes pastels “sparkle”. read more
Laid paper is another good choice for pastel and chalk. Pastel papers with a laid surface have a texture of parallel lines which is clearly visible in the drawing. This is a very old style of paper and is often favored for portrait sketches and figure drawings. read more
