As mentioned above, St.Petersburg, like Moscow, is mostly safe for visiting as a tourist. Obviously there are pickpockets near the main tourist attractions. I did it before going to St. Petersburg for a week as a tourist, just to make sure I wasn't going to walk into any dodgy areas. After coming back all I can say is that the previous answers were rigth, St. Petersburg seemed to me as safe as any other european big city, and probably safer than many western european capitals. read more
