Stalingrad was originally called Volgograd, as it is situated on the Volga River. In Stalin's time, the city was renamed Stalingrad. You don't see it on any contemporary maps of Russia because Khrushchev ordered the name restored to Volgograd as part of the process of de-Stalinization of the Soviet Union in the early 1960s. read more
