For the purposes of narrating the sequence of events to the general public, I have noticed that the "5" is often skipped to announce that the ignition sequence has begun. I don't think this is in any way official—it just adds to the drama. read more

In the actual countdown procedure, the Test Director announces the countdown times over the communications net at 5 second intervals starting at about T-60 seconds (I think that’s the start time, it’s been quite a while since I looked in that procedure) and once per second from T-10 seconds to zero. read more
