Is the 6.5 Creedmoor a reliable elk hunting rifle?

With proper bullet selection and good shot placement, yes. 6.5mm class cartridges are, IMHO, on the edge for elk. But 6.5mm is regularly used in Europe to take moose… so consider that. Having seen several elk taken with a .243, even smaller than a 6.5 Creedmoor, only one not dropping within a few yards, I would say yes, it is more than capable of taking an elk. Before the 6.5 Creedmoor was born, this was my favorite cartridge for any recoil-sensitive shooters. I grew up hunting with one stoked with 150-grain Partition handloads, and I never had a problem cleanly killing a bull. Great .270 elk bullets: Nosler 160-grain Partition; Barnes 140-grain TSX BT; Swift 150-grain A-Frame. Bullet weight: 150 grs. read more

Heck, Scandinavian hunters have been using the 6.5×55, which is a virtual ballistic twin to the 6.5 Creedmoor, for hunting moose and caribou for well over a century. With that in mind, there is no reason you couldn’t use the 6.5 Creedmoor for hunting elk, moose, or other absolutely massive animals. read more
