ISIS was founded by Abu al-Zarqawi, who was part of the mujahadeen backed by Pakistani ISI, not the CIA. America called Islamic State in Iraq al-Qaeda-in-Iraq. It's the same group. The US had captured Abu al-Baghdadi, as well as Abu al-Julani and other prominent leaders of ISI and Nursa Front. read more

That doesn’t mean the US created Isis, of course, though some of its Gulf allies certainly played a role in it – as the US vice-president, Joe Biden, acknowledged last year. But there was no al-Qaida in Iraq until the US and Britain invaded. read more
