Shiva is worshipped in South more, however, even in south it is acknowldeged that Shiva lived (lives) on Kailash Parbat in Himalayas. So Origin of Shiva has to be in the North. It is not clear why North is more into Rama and Krishna worship compared to Shiva. read more

Sambhu, another name of Lord Shiva, also said to have been of Dravidian origin, derived from the word Chembu, or Chempu or Sembu, meaning copper or red metal. According to some the phallic symbol of Shiva is of Austric origin and so is the name linga. read more
