Is the Prince of Wales obliged to learn the Welsh language?

I believe that Prince Charles did spend some effort to learn rudimentary Welsh and I recall he may have actually spoken a few words in Welsh at his investiture in 1969 at Caernarfon Castle in North Wales. Welsh nationalist sentiment was running strong at the time, and there are more Welsh speakers in North Wales than in the rest of Wales. read more

Prince Charles spent a term at the University of Wales in Aberystwyth, learning to speak Welsh and their culture. He then gave a speech to the Welsh youth organization Urdd Gobaith Cymru. I also think he can converse in Spanish, French and German and for some reason Pidgin English. read more

Prince of Wales (Welsh: Tywysog Cymru) was a title granted to princes born in Wales from the 12th century onwards; the term replaced the use of the word king. One of the last Welsh princes, Llywelyn ap Gruffudd, was killed in battle in 1282 by Edward I, King of England, whose son Edward (born in Caernarfon Castle in 1284) was invested as the first English Prince of Wales in 1301. read more
