The original, first generation, PS3 was compatible with all previous versions. All models since then, are not. The models above were first generation, and as noted did play both ps1 and ps2 games. read more

All the PS3 models are compatible with PS1 games. You can insert a PS1 CD in any of them and that works. I have the last PS3 model, the slim, and I do it regularly in order to play my PS1 Final Fantasy games. Though only the fist PS3 model was compatible with PS2 games. read more

Whenever the compatibility question comes up, the answer always defaults to"most PS1 games are compatible with the PS3", which is great, unless you happen to be interested in one of the exceptions. I found this list of compatible games on Wikipedia, but I'm not sure how complete it is. read more

If the PS3 has four USB ports, and the panel where you insert the disc is black and not silver, and it doesn't have a spot on the front for SD cards and other flash memory, you have a 20GB PS3 and it is hardware backwards compatible with PS2 games, congrats. read more
