In the aftermath of the Vietnam debacle, many refugees from the defeated South Vietnam made their way to Portland. Add in the usual immigration and transplantation, and the Asian community is quite large and quite vibrant in this city. The Naito family is especially prominent. read more

There isn't an Asian community per say like a lot of other cities have. There are numerous historical reasons for this that have been well covered in these forums already. Portland's Chinatown is more of a geographic descriptor then a racial one. There are a lot of Chinese shops and restaurants in that area, but few, if any of the owners live there. read more
