Is there evidence that Socrates existed?

It is unfortunate that he chose not to write (so as to be consistent with his philosophy), but there is sufficient documentary evidence from his students (Alcibiades, Antisthenes, Isocrates, Xenophon, Plato) and other contemporaries (Aristophanes, Gorgias, Critias, Euripides, Sophocles, Diogenes, Prodicus) that he existed. read more

That Socrates existed is not an extraordinary claim; he is said to have been an excellent teacher and philosopher. That somebody named Jesus existed is not an extraordinary claim. That he was the son of god, was raised from the dead, and performed miracles – not that is an extraordinary claim. read more

Now there is no proof that Socrates existed, nor is there any proof that Jesus existed. There is circumstantial evidence that both existed, which as you say are written accounts by other people. But evidence is not proof. read more
