What are the skin hazards associated with welding and radiation? Welding arcs and flames emit intense visible, ultraviolet, and infrared radiation. UV radiation in a welding arc will burn unprotected skin just like UV radiation in sunlight. read more
There is some IR, but its not a significant problem. You feel the heat, and it reminds you to put in gloves and protective clothing. The problem is the ultraviolet radiation that arc welding generates. It will give ‘sunburn’ through clothing. I’ve seen a welder wearing a thin cotton shirt w/o a tee shirt under it. read more
Welding arcs and flames emit intense visible, ultraviolet, and infrared radiation. UV radiation in a welding arc will burn unprotected skin just like UV radiation in sunlight. This hazard is true for direct exposure to UV radiation as well as radiation that is reflected from metal surfaces, walls, and ceilings. read more
Fortunately, the infrared radiation emitted by normal welding arcs causes damage only within a comparatively short distance from the arc. There is an immediate burning sensation in the skin surrounding the eyes should they be exposed to arc heat. read more
