It is clearly a research or test reactor since there is no cooling system or power generator. It looks like the original Chicago Pile-1 that Enrico Fermi and others built in 1942. read more

As far as I can ascertain, the first reactor built in Japan was the Japan Research Reactor 1, the JRR-1, and it appears to have been a model L-54 built by International Atomics. The date seems to match 1957, though I can't see when the reactor actually went critical. read more
