An Ivy League school is a university that is a member of a particular athletic conference, the Ivy League. There are 8 of them. Among them are the oldest universities in the country. In fact all but I think one were founded prior to independence from Britain. Vanderbilt is not a member of the Ivy League. read more

Nationally, i'm not sure how powerful Vanderbilt's name is outside of its region. It's pretty weak in the West coast, not sure about how strong it is in the East. Overall, i wouldn't compare it to the Ivy-league schools. read more
