By the way, Tchaikovsky wrote a book on harmony which has been translated into English. It's a good book, but it is better suited to the serious music student as he moves on very quickly. read more

Harmony by Walter Piston. Is not my favorite, however it’s very popular in U.S. It’s a general book of harmony, I think it’s friendly with the reader and a good book to begin. Treatise on Harmony by Arnold Schoenberg. I like it much better than Piston’s, but it’s not as clear for a self student. read more

A good textbook can bring together theoretical ideas developed by multiple sources and relate them to one another in a meaningful way. However, a book alone isn't going to cut it, in my opinion. Familiarize yourself with some basic chordal notations, especially scale degree roman numeral notation. read more
