Should I learn the drums or piano?

I learned to play piano first, and eventually my parents allowed me to pick up the drums. At first, I thought piano was the most boring instrument, and drums was the coolest. To this day, my heart lies with the drums but I do love playing piano as well. read more

Learn both. If not piano then learn guitar. Drummers who have a sense of chords and melody are amazing and many do. Not that the drums aren't a melodic instrument, they are, especially in the hands of Neil Peart and Phillip Simmons (sp) and many drummers write songs for their bands. Learn to sing also. read more

If you are starting from scratch and don't know anything about music notation, you should learn some of that as well. Learning a very basic rock beat on a drum set isn't all too difficult; I've taught friends with no musical background to play a basic beat in about 30 minutes or so.
