In Ruth’s day the starter was expected to pitch the whole game. They would only come out if they were getting knocked around. If a reliever was brought in, he was a reliever because he wasn’t good enough to start. Ruth would often be hitting against a starter who had thrown over 120 pitches and was tired late in the game or a second rate pitcher. read more

But I’ve often wondered if The Babe would be as good if he played in the today .Certainly there are things he would have to deal with that he didn’t in the Twenties and vise versa.
