I believe that John the Baptist was certainly real. Josephus wrote about how he criticised Herod Antipas for marrying his brother’s former wife, although forbidden by Jewish tradition. Josephus tells us that the wedding actually took place in 34 CE and resulted in Aretas, king of Nabatea, attacking Herod Antipas in 36 CE. read more
