Was Medusa a mortal?

Medusa, Sthenno and Euryale are generally called the Gorgons but Medusa has the honor of being called The Gorgon, or in the singular, Gorgo. Sthenno and Euryale are immortal but Medusa was mortal and ruthlessly killed by the son of Zeus, Perseus. read more

Polydectes seized his opportunity to disgrace and even get rid of Perseus and asked for the head of the only mortal Gorgon: Medusa. Medusa was a formidable foe, since her hideous appearance was able to render any onlooker into stone. read more

Since Medusa's parents were Phorcys and Ceto, both sea deities, it would only be logical to assume that Medusa would share immortality with her two sisters. After all, the offspring of two immortals (or deities) should also be immortal. Case in point: Ares, the son of Zeus and Hera, was immortal. read more
