Until 1918 the are now called the country of Jordan was a part of the Ottoman (Osmanli) Empire ruled from Istanbul by Turkish speakers. The original area of what was then called Transjordan (later the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan) included the ‘west bank of the Jordan River, lost to Israel in the 1967 war that now forms whatever it is that is part of something called Palestine (with Gaza, notionally). read more
