"Innocence" is an odd word to apply here. I doubt anyone has tried to apply it to Cortes. At most some might argue the events he figured in were normal or expected in some sense. At the time, they would be excused as part of a state of war between Christendom and infidels, but even this is not calling them innocent. read more
