What are some interesting inventions that fell into disuse?

My vote for interesting technology that has all but disappeared is the Nixie tube. This is a vacuum tube with fluorescent numbers inside it. By applying an electric charge to different grids containing fluorescent material in the shape of a number, you can make the Nixie tube display different digits. read more

You would think it would be magnetic tape by now, after all the C60 cassette, reel to reel recorders, 8-track systems, VHS and Betamax have all gone into museums, but no the stuff just keeps being useful in spite of virtual tape libraries being “the thing” in the datacentre for over ten years now. read more
