Miles basically defined modal jazz with that one. Coltrane’s Impressions is a classic, Herbie Hancock’s Maiden Voyage as well. Much of jazz after 1958–59 about had a huge modal slant to it, so it’s hard to say which would be the best among modal jazz albums particularly. read more

Dolphin Dance is interesting in it's construction. It balances evolving modality with variations on traditional ii V I jazz changes. Really fun tune to dig. Maiden Voyage, the tune, is more a typical modal composition. read more
