The neighbourhoods that are ‘relatively‘ safe in Quito are towards the North of Quito at La Carolina and Colon (or what is known as the commercial area, where most of the expensive high rise buildings are - so downtown you may say). read more

My husband and I lived in Cuenca for a year and a half. Just returned to the States a few weeks ago. We met many Ecuadorians and Cuencanos there. I never experienced, or heard of any “bad” neighborhoods per say. Cuenca isn’t like Quito or Guayaquil, which have certain areas one knows to stay away from for personal safety. read more
