The single most challenging trail I've come across is the Pacific Northwest Trail, which winds it's way through northern Montana, Idaho, and Washington. In terms of elevation change, it's comparable to the PCT - in half the miles. All but 400 miles pass through bear habitat. There are long stretches without resupply. read more
