Ocean Floors are created by rifting and as time goes by the ocean floor spreads mostly because of subduction on the other end of the plate. As the rift spreads new ocean floor is created by the lava. Iron and magnetite in the lava is oriented to the magnetic poles of the Earth and is preserved in that orientation as the lava cools. read more
