What are the off road suspension design parameters?

Thanks for A2A... The suspension selection depends mostly on... 1. Ability of the wheels to articulate independent of each other (Independent suspension) 2. Roll resistance to prevent roll over due to high amplitude excitation at one wheel 3. Steering consistancy at any (front) wheel positions. read more

4. Keep suspension stiffness (wheel rate) away from driveline and differential modes to prevent 'wheel hop' under torque. 5. Minimize roll height and provide adequate roll stiffness 6. Typically road going cars use 3-g bump loads for design. You might want to better that - 3.5 or 4 g might be necessary. read more

Vinayak Maharshi did an excellent job of covering everything which goes into suspension design. I will like to add: most purpose built race cars are built by a small number of builders, targeting a particular race series, with very strict rules. Designing suspension is a give and take comprise in about every area. read more
