Cast iron is one of the oldest ferrous metals commonly used in outdoor ornaments and construction. It consists of iron, carbon and silicon with traces of sulfur, phosphorus and manganese. Cast iron's properties are changed by adding various alloying elements, or alloyants. Next to carbon, silicon is the most important alloyant because it forces carbon out of solution.
