I grew up with Dickens. When I was playing, my mother would always be either working or reading a book. It was often one of the thirty volumes of Dickens' works translated into Russian. When I was eight, she gave me David Copperfield. Since then, I have been a fan of Dickens. read more

My sense is that the bad parts of Dickens - the infamously mawkish Olivers and little Nells for example - come from exactly the same place as the good parts, and that without them his novels would lose an indefinable beauty. read more
