What are your feelings/pros and cons of living in Houston?

I moved to Houston from rural Virginia about three years ago. I've lived in several big cities in my life, and Houston is unique among them. First the cons: The traffic. The traffic is terrible. Houston is very car-centric, you have to drive everywhere, congestion is bad and people around here don't know how to drive. read more

Now, there are elements that are pros or cons, depending entirely on your perspective. I mentioned the lack of local culture and tradition, but there are a couple of elements that are clear and overt. Bluntly, if you're offended by guns and God, you probably won't like Texas. read more

My two-cents about 5 pros and cons (on the basis of living in Houston for about three years 2007 to 2010) Pros: 1. No state income tax. Huge business and career opportunities. 2. Low cost of living in terms of rent money & utilities 3. Great restaurants (I've lived near the Galleria, so I mean the ones around there, not sure about elsewhere) 4. read more

All in all, I think what bothered me the most was the lack of opportunity brought on by the 15 years Houston stood at a standstill (about 1982 until 1997 or so) economically. Things have improved there, I am sure, opportunity-wise. read more
