Educated people tend to think NAFTA was harmful overall. Many small farmers couldn’t compete with powerful agribusiness corporations or large producers with access to subventions and technology. Those farmers were in a precarious situation and faced poverty, so many of them migrated to other cities, to the USA, or given the lack of opportunities turned into the flourishing drug business or into crime. read more

Both Mexican and Canadian governments support NAFTA and do not want to renegotiate the agreement. The Mexican government though faces strong opposition from campesinos (peasant farmers) who have protested against the agreement by attending large rallies against it. read more

Without Nafta, trade between Mexico and the United States would be governed by World Trade Organization rules, Mexican trade experts say. Tariffs for imports of Mexican goods into the United States would probably rise to an average of about 3 percent, an increase that experts say is not enough to deter trade. read more
