Night is part of a trilogy. The next books are Dawn and Day. Given that, and given the subject matter, I think it's just a simple metaphor for a very dark time. Night is a very personal time for Elie and so it is a strong symbol throughout the book. At the beginning of the book Night, Elie feels that night is the only time when he is certain that he is safe so he treasures the hours of darkness. read more
