Honestly, if we're talking camping (as opposed to backpacking) your most important piece of gear is a decent small truck or SUV. I prefer 4 door or extended cab trucks with a camper shell (there's a reason for the name), but one could make a SUV work, although I find sleeping in the back of a truck easier. read more
You can even get a wall tent with an insert for a chimney, should you want a stove for cooking and warmth inside. The biggest problem with these are the cost, and the pain to set them up. But for camping in one spot for even a month, they are amazing. read more
When pitching a tent, not only should you have a tarp under it (just to the edge of the tent’s footprint), but a trench about 3-6 inches deep should be dug all around it and, at the lowest elevation point, away from the tent about 2-3 feet to carry away any rainfall. read more
