What happened to Cinderella's dad in the original story?

In the original Grimm version, he is still alive and is a merchant. I think in some variations of the fairy tale he died. In the disney movie he died from a illness, or I personally think Lady Tremaine killed him. read more

In this story the Cinderella character is the daughter of a widowed Prince, (the mother's death is not specified, she simply doesn't exit in the story) who eventually marries Cinderella's nurse maid.
