The Ottoman Empire had oil. It had enough oil that the British cut the Ottoman Empire up and stole the oil. Unlike the Germans and the French, the British only stole land that was woth stealing. read more
Needless to say, none of the above happened. Quite the opposite. Turkey aligned with Germany in the first world war, and the allies did attempt to invade and divide its empire. Churchill, instead of handing over the warships that ordinary Turks had paid for by subscription, had them seized for the British navy. read more
The Ottoman Empire already didn't control all of its oil in the region. And the empire had some deep money problems in its last era, so clearly oil didn't help. If oil was the only thing for a good economy, today Turkey wouldn't be wealthier than Iran, Saudi Arabia, and Qatar. read more
