The Spanish-American war wasn’t particularly important in and of itself. While it resulted in Spain’s loss of Cuba, Puerto Rico, Guam, and the Philippine Islands among others, this was inevitable because the Spanish Empire had effectively ceased to exist. read more
Spain ceded Florida (and parts of Oregon) to the United States in 1819, almost 80 years before the Spanish-American War occurred. Spain barely policed Florida, which was used as a staging ground for Seminole attacks on American settlers in the South, and gave it up for basically nothing. read more
