I grew up in Portland and found it very difficult as a child. As I got older it got easier. What I mean is like any town, when there is lack of diversity, the kids can be quite cruel. read more

I see now the younger generation of minorities still moving away and many of my white friends in LA talk of moving to Portland and many have. Portland really is Portlandia and to many people they see how it's portrayed and it's a utopia. read more

Overall Portland is a decent small big city with it's"pockets" of diversity, but it's still difficult to live in a city that is so predominantly white. Like others have said, it's a pretty passive aggressive city so it can make it difficult to point out racism or micro-aggressions to folks here. read more

With amazing venues like WOW Hall and McDonald Theatre and an endless string of festivals and events, Portland might be where you go for a lot of things, but Eugene is where you go for the music. The city is also home to the Eugene Symphony. read more

Portland is very white. That doesn't make it hostile to minorities but it does stack the deck in systemic terms and it's infrequent that steps to correct that are taken. No one openly claims to be anti-minority like they did in the 90's but that doesn't mean there isn't that sentiment in some circles. read more
