What is it like to live in South Bend, IN?

Basically is there anywhere in South Bend that feels kinda like Portland? Please? Maybe? If you have any suggestions of what neighborhood would fit us, it would help immensely as we will not be able to explore the area first-hand (we live in Portland, OR and cannot afford to fly out before the move). There are better cities to live in, just minutes away. Granger is beautiful and Mishawaka has its charm. I moved to South Bend when I turned 21, worst decision of my life. I was so traumatized that by 22 I moved as far away as I could, to California. South Bend is not a place to raise children or walk around after dark.. read more
