The downside of neurology is that it attracts individuals (like myself!) who are interested in questions of mind/ matter. And it is also attractive to puzzle solvers as localization is much like detective work. We are often more cerebral. Like internal medicine, neurology is increasingly using hospitalists to manage inpatients. If you are in an academic setting you may also teach and/or do research. You may or may not also do diagnostic testing such as lumbar punctures, EEG, EMG, or sleep studies. read more

A neurologist (at least in the US), is a medical doctor who finished 4 years of medical school, one year of internal medicine internship (called prelim year), and 3 years of neurology residency. Most will go on to 1-2 years of sub-specialty fellowship training for a specific area of neurology, more on that later. read more
