The word “scientist” was coined by William Whewell in 1834. Up to that time, scientists were called natural philosophers. So historically scientists are philosophers, and science is part of philosophy. read more
SCIENTIST: a specialist in science; person whose profession is investigating in one of the natural sciences, as biology, chemistry, physics, etc. By definition, a scientist could be called a philosopher of Nature (as in our natural physical environment), but a philosopher wouldn't necessarily be called a scientist. read more
