There's not much toxic material used in fireworks these days - no mercury, no arsenic, no phosphorous, no HCB. Nearly all the chemical ingredients burn in the air and disperse as smoke. Barium (green stars) is somewhat toxic, but only its soluble salts, and when it burns it ends up as insoluble oxide or sulfate. read more
