The feeling is kind of like chasing the end of a rainbow. It all begins--the joy and the pain of it all--with an idea. I'll be sitting somewhere, looking at how sunlight filters through the green leaves, and I'll get an idea. An idea for a book or short story, or whatever. I'll grin and try to grab hold of the idea. The way you write. Hands down. An unskilled writer can make the most emotionally-charged situation fall flat. Ideas in writing - or in speech - are worth nothing unless they are delivered in an appropriate fashion. Obviously, the method of delivery is very different depending on the writer. Read Hemingway.
