The Times reader is clearly not easily amused by any revisions to the classic logo, which is why the masthead has barely changed since the name was changed from the New York Daily Times to the New York Times in 1857. Stylistically, the previous major change to the logo was the dropping of the hyphen in New-York in the 1890s. read more

The New York Times uses a variety of typefaces in its layouts. The Masthead (or Nameplate) in its most recent redesign in 1966 was redrawn with care by Ed Benguiat. He refined its hairlines, and also had the honor of severing the vestigial period from the nameplate. read more
