There was an amusing article from a while back that claimed the most complicated characters by frequency, that is actually a part of the PRC orthography, are 的 and 我. And that if these two characters were somehow simplified, then the overall complexity of Chinese characters could be reduced by at least 10% (if I remember right). read more
