I would argue the most important event in Chinese history was the discovery of gunpowder, which is composed of sulfur, charcoal, and saltpeter. Saltpeter had been known to the Chinese as early as the first century A.D., and alchemical texts from the fifth century describe the purple flame that saltpeter produces. read more
