The Allies carried about 2.3 million tons of cargo in all over the course of the airlift. Life in West Berlin during the blockade was not easy. Primarily, the Berlin Blockade was an episode in the Cold War – Stalin was taking over eastern Europe by salami tactics, and America had just adopted the Truman Doctrine. The Berlin Airlift was organized to break this blockade. At the height of Berlin Airlift project planes landed in West Berlin at the rate of one every one to two minutes. As a result USSR ended the blockade in May 1949, and the airlift stopped in September 1949. read more
