Basically a balloon's free lift is the weight of the ambient air it displaces, minus the weight of the gas inside the balloon (the hot air is a lighter"gas" than the ambient air") minus the weight of the balloon and any associated in flight rigging/basket/fuel etc. read more
The 1785 Rozière balloon, a type of hybrid balloon, named after its creator, Jean-François Pilâtre de Rozier, has a separate cell for a lighter than air gas (typically helium,) as well as a cone below for hot air (as is used in a hot air balloon) to heat the helium at night. read more
